About the museum
The Vareltzidaina Mansion is one of the few surviving examples of traditional Lesbian mansion architecture from the late Ottoman period. It is named after its last resident. It lies in the coastal village of Petra and has two storeys. The solid stone-built ground floor gives it a fortress-like character, as in older fortified country houses, while the upper floor is built of lighter materials, using the “bagdati” technique, that is a wooden frame plastered with mud.
On the upper floor all rooms are arranged around a central hall and decorated with outstanding woodcarving, including on the ceilings. Further features of the mansion are its plaster elements and wall paintings, examples of folk art with scenes from seaside towns, anthemion (palmette) motifs and garlands of flowers.
