About the museum

The Iakovidis Digital Museum opened in August 2008 in Chidira on Western Lesbos, the birthplace of the painter Georgios Iakovidis (1853–1932). It was created on the initiative of the Morfotiko kai Politistiko Idryma “Nikolaos G. Papadimitriou” and is considered the first fully digital art museum in the country.

The space has been designed on the basis of a special museological study drawing on new technologies. All the works shown are digital reproductions, which visitors can study with a magnifying glass, by isolating details of the painting and by comparing them with works by Iakovidis himself or by his teachers. On the ground floor the painter’s life is presented with digital applications and archive material; the first floor is devoted to his work, and in the basement a video about his artistic career is shown and educational activities take place.

The museum has remained closed since 2019. In July 2026 the building was transferred to the foundation as a donation, and the Municipality of Western Lesbos is preparing its modernisation and reopening, but no date has been announced.
