About the museum

The Archaeological Museum of Arta (AMA) is housed in a modern building at the southern edge of the town, beside the eastern bank of the Arachthos River and near the historic Arta Bridge. It is devoted exclusively to Ambracia, the colony founded by the Corinthians in 625 BC on the northern slopes of the Perantha hill, which today lies beneath modern Arta. Ambracia very early became the urban, economic and political centre of Epirus.

The exhibition focuses on urban life and is organised in three main sections: “Ta en dimo” (public life), “Ta en tafo” (the cemeteries) and “Ta en oiko” (homes and daily life). In the entrance hall the history of archaeological research in Arta since 1897 is presented, while the tour ends with the end of Ambracia and the relocation of its inhabitants to Nicopolis.

The collection includes numerous finds from the cemeteries, public buildings and settlement of the city, from the Archaic to the Roman period. The permanent exhibition displays 1,687 objects. The museum was certified by the Ministry of Culture in 2024.
