About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Karystos has been operating since 1988 in the western wing of the Giokaleio Cultural Foundation, a bequest of the benefactor Nikolaos Giokalas. It is located on the east side of the town's harbour, almost opposite the Venetian Bourtzi tower.
The permanent collection includes finds from ancient Karystia, that is, from the area that corresponded to the city-state of Karystos and its territory in the classical period, as well as from Styra and Drakospita. The exhibits are presented chronologically, from the prehistoric to the Roman period. In the main hall are displayed sculptures, architectural members, grave reliefs and inscriptions from Palaiochora, the core of ancient Karystos, dating from the late Classical to the Roman period. The collection is complemented by finds from the harbour of Geraistos. Explanatory texts on the walls and labels beside each exhibit inform visitors about the historical development of the town and the wider area.
