About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Corfu has been housed since 1967 in a two-storey modern building in Garitsa. It holds antiquities from the ancient city of Corfu and from the rest of the island. From 2012 to 2016 extensive restoration work was carried out on the building complex and the collections were re-displayed with a modern museological approach.
The exhibition is laid out on two levels. On the ground floor, finds from prehistory are presented, from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age, many of which are on display for the first time, as well as the foundation of the ancient city at the end of the 8th century BC, during the period of colonisation. On the upper floor visitors can follow the course of Corfu from the 7th century BC to the 4th century AD, with finds from the agora, the harbours, the sanctuaries, the houses, the workshops and the cemetery of the ancient city, as well as from other sites on the island.
The most important exhibits include the pediment of the Temple of Artemis, on which the goddess is depicted as a Gorgon, funerary monuments of the same period such as the ‘Lion of Menekrates’, and inscribed monuments such as the grave stele of Arniadas.
