About the museum
On 12 September 1840 a group of music-loving citizens of Corfu signed the founding minutes of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu. This music-education and concert organisation, whose first artistic director was the composer Nikolaos Mantzaros, developed into a central hub of art music in the Ionian Islands and in 19th-century Greece.
The Museum of the Philharmonic was inaugurated in 2010, on the 170th anniversary of the Society, and is considered unique of its kind in Greece. It presents the course of the Society through evidence displayed on the first floor of its building, on Odos Nikiforou Theotoki, in the heart of the old town. It bears the name of Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros (1795–1872), composer, among other things, of the Greek national anthem.
The collections include old musical instruments, paintings and photographs, lists of pupils, original scores, some by Mantzaros, and audio evidence, such as rare first recordings.
