About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Lefkada holds the cultural treasures of the prefecture and presents the long development of the island, from the Middle Palaeolithic period to the late Roman period. It is housed on one floor of the building of the Municipal Cultural Centre, with a vestibule and four halls for the permanent exhibition.
The exhibits come from the burial mounds at Steno and Skaros in Nydri, from the Choirospilia cave at Evgiro, from the cemeteries of the ancient city of Lefkada and from other sites on the island. A significant part of the prehistoric finds is linked to the excavations of the German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld in the early 20th century.
The first hall is devoted to the public and private life of the inhabitants, with architectural members, pottery, coins, tools and musical instruments. The second presents religion and the deities worshipped; the third the burial customs, with a reconstruction of part of an ancient cemetery; and the fourth, dedicated to the memory of Dörpfeld, the prehistoric periods, among them the tombs of the Early Helladic II period at Steno in Nydri.
