About the museum
The new Archaeological Museum of Thermos is located about one kilometre south of the village of Thermo, at the eastern end of Lake Trichonida. It was inaugurated in 2016 and replaced the museum that had operated until then in an old building of 1909 within the archaeological site. The plot was made available by the Municipality of Thermo in 1998, while the building and the exhibition were funded by European programmes.
The exhibition is structured into six thematic sections. It presents finds from the sanctuary of Apollo Thermios, from smaller neighbouring sanctuaries and from cities of the Aetolian League, from prehistoric to Roman times. Visitors follow the development from the first traces of settlement and the creation of the sanctuary, through its transformation into a religious and political centre of the Aetolians, to its decline.
A prominent exhibit is the bronze stele inscribed on both sides from the 3rd century BC, which records the treaty of the Aetolians and Acarnanians. Emphasis is also placed on the prehistoric settlement founded around 1700 BC, with the apsidal Megaron A. The museum has exhibition texts, drawings and reconstructions, as well as texts and drawings in Braille. The multi-purpose room hosts interactive digital applications and educational programmes.
