About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Agrinio is one of the oldest in the region. The building in which it is housed was erected with a donation to Aetolia-Acarnania financed by the Papastratos brothers, and the museum has operated since the 1960s.
The exhibition follows a chronological order and presents finds from all over Aetolia-Acarnania, from the prehistoric to the Roman period. The Protogeometric and Geometric vessels from Kalydon, Pleuron and Trichonion illuminate local history, while the Mycenaean finds come from the tholos tombs of the Aitoliko area.
Among the most important exhibits are the marble sculptures from the heroon of Kalydon, with Meleager, Atalanta and other divine figures, the funerary stele of Kritolaos from the 2nd century BC, and the architectural antefixes from the decoration of the sanctuary of Lafria.
