About the museum
Near the present village of Akrotiri, one of the most important prehistoric sites of the Aegean has been excavated since 1967. Settlement began around 4500 BC as a Neolithic village and developed into a Proto-Cycladic settlement and later into a Middle Cycladic town. After an earthquake around 1650 BC the town was rebuilt and acquired the form of the Late Cycladic period, which visitors see today.
The town was first struck by an earthquake and then buried under the deposits of the catastrophic volcanic eruption, probably at the end of the 17th century BC. Thus streets with a drainage system, squares and multi-storey public and private buildings with rich household items and wall paintings were preserved. The excavated area is protected by a bioclimatic shelter, which allows a comfortable visit. The wall paintings and the movable finds are displayed in the Museum of Prehistoric Thera at Fira.
