About the museum
The collection is housed in the church of Agia Triada in the Venetian Kastelli of Pyrgos. The church was founded in 1664, rebuilt in 1975, and was formerly the katholikon of a women’s monastery. The collection was assembled after the earthquakes of 1956 and includes icons and heirlooms from churches of Kastelli and the wider area.
The icons date from the 16th to the 18th century and are works by local icon painters of the Cyclades as well as by well-known Cretan painters, such as the priest Emmanouil Skordilis and Viktoras, who were active in the second half of the 17th century. The collection is complemented by carved wooden works, such as crosses, artophoria (tabernacles) and the 19th-century epitaphios, as well as ceramics, parts of iconostases, liturgical books, ecclesiastical vessels, vestments and embroidery.
