About the museum
Gitana, surrounded by the river Kalamas, remains relatively unknown to the wider public, yet it has rich archaeological remains and a varied natural landscape. The ancient city was founded in the second half of the 4th century BC and was the political centre of the Koinon of the Thesprotians.
The theatre by the banks of the river served, besides performances of ancient drama, also for the assemblies of the mainland alliance. On the stone rows of seats, inscriptions engraved with the names of men and women can still be seen, such as Menedamos, Pausanias, Damoxena and Philista, relating to the manumission of slaves. Important public buildings that survive are the Prytaneion-Archive of the city, with mosaic floors in the dining rooms, and the market stoa, where many bases for honorary statues and dedications were found.
