About the museum
The Municipal Gallery of Corfu was founded in 1991 and was initially housed in a town house. In 1995 it moved to the eastern part of the Old Palace of Archangel Michael and St George, with the aim of forming the core of a historical museum of the town and the island. Since November 2008 part of the print collection has been displayed in the building of the Ionian Parliament. Both buildings are neoclassical monuments from the period of the British protectorate.
The collection comes mainly from donations, the most important being those of Georgios Samartzis (42 works), Aglaia Pappa (23 works) and Filippos Makotsis (12 works). Most of it consists of works by Corfiot painters of the 19th century, such as Charalampos Pachis, Pavlos Prosalentis the Younger, Angelos Giallinas, Spyridon Skarvelis and Georgios Samartzis. The permanent exhibition follows the development of painting and art on Corfu from the 16th to the 20th century.
Among the best-known works are “The Assassination of Kapodistrias” by Charalampos Pachis, “Markas” and “The Flock” by Angelos Giallinas, and “The Wind-up Piano” by Georgios Samartzis. The gallery also organises temporary exhibitions and educational programmes for children.
