Museum of Palaiopolis-Mon Repos

About the museum

The museum is housed in the Mon Repos mansion, a neoclassical building from the early 19th century, erected during the British protectorate (1828–1831) for Sir Frederick Adam, High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. The building was later used as a public building and, from 1864 to 1967, as the summer residence of the former royal family of Greece.

The museum opened to the public in 2001. The permanent exhibition spreads across fourteen rooms and has two main themes: the history of the building itself and the ancient city of Corfu, whose monuments lie in the Palaiopolis area around the estate. The themes are presented with original objects and visual material.

On the ground floor there are exhibits on the British period, on the first occupants of the mansion and on the first excavations of the 19th century, a model of the Kanoni peninsula with its ancient monuments, and a room decorated in the Regency style. On the first floor, the ancient agora, the Roman baths, and the architecture and cult practices of the sanctuaries of ancient Corfu are presented, as well as a video on the path from the ancient city to the present one. The second floor hosts temporary exhibitions and educational activities.
