About the museum
The Hellenic Children’s Museum was founded in Athens in 1987 as a non-profit association by a group of young professionals. Its aim is to help every child understand and enjoy the world in which they live, through play and interactive learning. Initially it developed educational programmes for school groups within other museums, and in 1990 it created a first model of a children’s museum in an area of 105 m² on Dimitressa Street.
In 1994 the Children’s Museum of Athens was inaugurated in the building at 14 Kydathinaion Street in Plaka, in cooperation with the Cultural Organisation of the Municipality of Athens. Today the museum is housed in the building of the Athens Odeion and operates in cooperation with OPANDA, the Culture, Sports and Youth Organisation of the Municipality of Athens.
The exhibits are three-dimensional environments with themes from science, technology, the natural environment, the arts, language, mathematics and children’s everyday life. Visitors play roles, experiment and collaborate with their parents and companions. The museum also develops educational programmes for schools, families and adults, as well as activities outside its building.
