About the museum

The Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum houses the collection of the shipowner Basil Goulandris and his wife Elise, which was formed in the second half of the 20th century. Basil Goulandris died in 1994 and Elise in 2000. The collection includes works of modern and contemporary European art, as well as works by Greek artists.

The museum opened in Athens, on Eratosthenous Street in Pagkrati, on 1 October 2019, after many years of preparation. The building combines a neoclassical mansion of the 1920s with a new multi-storey wing, five floors of which are below ground. The total area exceeds 7,000 square metres.

The permanent collection is displayed on the four floors above ground. It presents classics of modern art, glimpses of the 20th century and recent and contemporary Greek art. The building also houses a library, an auditorium, a shop and a café-restaurant in a courtyard garden.
