About the museum
The museum is housed in a traditional two-storey house in the centre of Gavalochori, a characteristic example of local architecture: the lower part dates from the Venetian period and the upper floor was added during Ottoman rule. The house was lived in by its owners’ family, Maria and Giorgos Stylianakis, who donated it to the village. The Ministry of Culture funded the fitting-out of the space, and many objects were offered by residents of the village.
The museum has operated since the late 1960s and was officially inaugurated in September 1993. The exhibition comprises seven rooms: the Kamarospitos (vaulted house), silk-making, pottery, kopanellia, stonemasons, church art and wood carving. In the Kamarospitos the daily life of a 19th-century Cretan household is presented with authentic furniture and utensils, while a historical section houses weapons, swords, paintings, lithographs and coins from various periods.
