About the museum
The War Museum of Askyfou on the Askyfou plateau in Sfakia is a private collection begun by Georgios A. Chatzidakis (1931–2007). As a ten-year-old child he lived through the German invasion of Crete; his family’s home was destroyed by bombing, and he lost a younger sister.
After the war he began to gather with passion every trace of the battle for Crete, to keep alive the memory of his ancestors and to encourage younger people to take an interest in their history. Today the collection includes more than 2,000 objects from the period 1940–1944 and continues to grow through the efforts of his son, Andreas Chatzidakis.
