About the museum
The cultural centre “Ancient House – Hippocrates Garden” in Mastichari on Kos is a reconstruction of a settlement from the 5th century BC. It operates as a museum from April to November and also hosts philosophy seminars and ecological programmes.
Visitors see a reconstruction of a two-storey stone ancient house (oikos) with a central room, kitchen, bathroom, andron (men’s room), gynaikonitis (women’s quarters) and a weaving area. In the Stoa of the Philosopher there are floor mosaics, wall paintings and a library of ancient philosophy, while the Stoa of the Abaton recreates the sleeping quarters where patients sought healing from Asklepios.
The site also includes a stone theatre with 80 seats, the Theatre of the Dancing Satyrs, the Museum of the Goddess Demeter with fragments of wall paintings from ancient vases and old farming tools, and an altar and the Temple of Apollo with Ionic columns. The herb garden is certified organic, and the “Eros” vineyard supplies a family winery that has produced wine since 2005.
