About the museum
The Kalymniko Spiti is a private initiative for the preservation and presentation of the Kalymnian way of life of the past century. Its founder, Faneromeni Skylla-Chalkidiou, gathered objects from across the island with her own effort and expense and recorded local stories and knowledge. The collection is presented in a restored traditional Kalymnian house on the south side of the Monastery of Agion Panton, in the area of Vothynoi.
The house recreates the household of an urban Kalymnian house from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. On display are traditional costumes and bridal dresses, household utensils, a loom, a spindle, a hand mill, clay jugs and vessels, traditional furniture such as a bed with the baby’s cradle above it, as well as old coins, books, letters, guns and swords. The everyday occupations, social events and the life of the Kalymnian sponge diver are also presented.
