About the museum
The Laografiko Mouseio Kastanofytou is located in the mountain village of Kastanofyto in the municipality of Argos Orestiko and is housed in the old primary school building on Megalou Alexandrou Street. It was founded by the Politistikos Syllogos Kastanofytou (Cultural Association of Kastanofyto) with the aim of preserving objects of folk tradition.
The first room displays photographs of village life and of events such as weddings and school celebrations, as well as photographs of fighters of the Democratic Army, since the village was their base in 1946–1947. The second room houses late 19th-century women’s costumes, textiles, embroidery, household utensils and agricultural tools, such as a hand-operated plough, millstones and storage jars for grain.
All the exhibits come from the village itself. The museum can be visited during the Kastanogiorti (chestnut festival), which is held every October in Kastanofyto.
