About the museum
The fortress was built in the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller and took its name from the many bitter orange trees (neratzies) of the area. It lies at the entrance to the harbour of Kos and is connected to the town by a stone bridge on the Leoforos Foinikon. It has two enclosures, separated by a moat, with towers and battlements. Architectural elements from ancient and early Christian buildings of the town were used in its construction.
The castle was formerly an islet, since the water-filled moat that separated it from the mainland lay where the Leoforos Foinikon now runs, and has since been filled in. Its present form is due to the Italian Archaeological Service, which during the Italian occupation demolished the Turkish additions and restored the castle to its original appearance.
