About the museum
Angelos Katakouzenos, a neurologist and psychiatrist, and Leto, a writer, belonged to the intellectual elite of the Generation of the 1930s and acted as ambassadors of Greek culture abroad. Their apartment on Amalias Avenue, a continuation of their first home on Pindarou Street, functioned from 1960 as a literary salon and hosted poets, writers, artists and scientists from Greece and abroad.
The house museum opened in September 2008 on the initiative of the foundation bearing the couple’s name. Its aim is to turn a historic Athenian house into a space with a social and educational character; it also hosts exhibitions of contemporary art, performances and events.
The collection includes more than 60 paintings, hundreds of drawings and prints, decorative objects, sculptures and French and Greek furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of the works come from donations by friends of the couple, such as Nikos Hatzikyriakos-Gikas, Spyros Vasileiou, Yannis Tsarouchis and Giorgos Gounaropoulos. Among the works, the portrait of Leto by Marc Chagall stands out. The house also preserves thousands of books, manuscripts and letters.
