About the museum
The Museum of Folk Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Chatzimichali” of the Municipality of Athens has been operating since 1980 in the old mansion of Aggeliki Chatzimichali (1895–1965), the first Greek woman folklorist, in Plaka. The street where the house stands today bears her name. The building is the work of the architect Aristotelis Zachos (1871–1939), who combined traditional elements with neo-Byzantine and Macedonian ones, and it is a monument of inter-war urban architecture. The interior wood carvings were created by the folk craftsman N. Thomopoulos.
The halls display folk art objects: wood carvings, metalwork, pottery, traditional costumes, embroideries and rugs from the loom. Part of the exhibits belongs to the Hellenic Folklore Society and part comes from private donations. The site also contains furniture, books, letters and personal objects of Aggeliki Chatzimichali, which show her work in the social and intellectual life of the country.
The purpose of the museum is the rescue, conservation and presentation of folk art objects and their connection with modern society. The museum organises educational programmes for all school levels and has a folklore library, accessible to scholars and researchers.
