About the museum
The Frissiras Museum was inaugurated on 27 November 2000 by the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Stephanopoulos, and began operating on 4 December 2000. It was founded by the family of Vlasis Frissiras, to whom the management of the foundation belongs, and it is a non-profit private legal entity.
The founder's collection includes more than 4,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints by European artists, which document the trends and philosophy of human-centred European painting after 1940. The museum also organises educational programmes, evenings of music and poetry, and art seminars.
The museum was initially housed in two neoclassical buildings in Plaka: at 3 Moni Asteriou Street, built in 1860 and restored in 1998–1999, and at 7 Moni Asteriou Street, designed by Ernst Ziller in 1900, which has been listed as a newer monument. The museum will continue to operate in the building at 7 Moni Asteriou Street.
