About the museum
The writer Patrick Leigh Fermor and the photographer Joan Leigh Fermor had a close bond with Greece and built their permanent home in Kalamitsi, a few kilometres from Kardamyli in Mani, where they lived until the end of their lives. The house was designed by the architect Nikos Hatzimichalis in close collaboration with the couple and completed in the mid-1960s.
In 1996 the couple bequeathed the house to the Benaki Museum, wishing that it be used for the museum’s purposes and remain open to the public. The estate comprises three traditional stone buildings among olive trees, cypresses, pistachio trees and wild flowers.
After two years of repair and restoration work, with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation as principal donor, the house reopened to the public in July 2019. Since then, guided tours and visits on request have been organised, and the site hosts artists and writers and functions as an educational centre.
