About the museum
The Kalamata annex of the War Museum was founded in 2023 and is housed in the building of the Old Episcopal Residence of the Metropolis of Messinia, at Mitropolitou Meletiou 10, where the Military Museum of Kalamata previously operated. The exhibition covers the period from the Greek Revolution of 1821 to the dispatch of the Greek Expeditionary Force to Korea (1950–1953) and is organised on two floors.
On the first floor the Greek Revolution is presented, with Kalamata as the first major city to be liberated, on 23 March 1821; the Macedonian Struggle, with a special reference to the Messinian Macedonian fighters and a piece of the tree on which the Bulgarians hanged Tellos Agras; the Balkan Wars; and the First World War.
The second floor continues with the First World War and the 9th Infantry Regiment, the Asia Minor Campaign, the Greco-Italian War of 1940–1941, the German attack, the Battle of the Forts and the Battle of Crete, the activities of the Greek forces in the Middle East and the National Resistance, and finally Korea, with photographs, videos, models and relics. In the forecourt a battle tank, an armoured vehicle, artillery pieces and an F-5 aircraft have been installed.
