Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum

About the museum

The Sotirelis family has produced olive oil in Panagia on Thasos for four generations. The olive press began operating in 1915, and production relied entirely on the water mill: water from three springs in the village turned the mill, and the energy was transmitted to the machinery. When the island was electrified in 1968, the factory was gradually equipped with new machinery, which improved the quality and speed of production. The olive press produced olive oil until 2007.

Today visitors can see the water mill in operation and the industrial machinery added over the years. In a specially arranged space an exhibition presents, through photographs and videos, the entire traditional process from the harvest of the olives to the bottling of the oil, together with information on olive oil and olive trees. A short guided tour is also possible.

The Olive Center Thassos shop, where olive oil, olives and natural products are sold, operates on the museum premises.
