About the museum
Olive and olive oil have for thousands of years been an integral part of the life of the people of Thasos. To connect the production process with the history and culture of the place, the Thassos Organic Olive Mills enterprise created next to its facilities a visitable space, the Olive and Olive Oil Museum. Its founder is Dr Argyris Tyrologos.
On the ground floor the methods of crushing olives and producing olive oil on Thasos through the centuries are presented, while on the first floor photographic material shows the history of the olive and its relationship with Greek civilisation. Through large windows, visitors see the production line, the storage tanks and the packaging lines of the olive press.
The Folk Culture Wing “Sotiria Tyrologou” houses embroideries, woven textiles, knitwear and clothes designed and sewn by her, together with reconstructions of the tools she used. In the courtyard there is a garden with olive varieties, as well as an archaeological excavation where a storeroom with 16 pithoi was found, the so-called pitheon.
