About the museum
The museum has operated since August 1981 in Potamia, the village where the sculptor Polygnotos Vagis was born. He was a sculptor of international renown who excelled in America and worked with the direct carving technique in various stones. The museum is housed in a two-storey stone building in the centre of the village, which was formerly the primary school, and belongs to the Municipality of Thasos.
The collection comprises 98 sculptures, of which 25 are very small and are displayed together in one display case, as well as fifteen paintings from the period 1920–1960. Works of the first period (1919–1930) are inspired mainly by ancient Greek history and mythology and by more recent Greek history, and are made of plaster, bronze and marble. Works of the second period (from 1932 onwards) have a semi-abstract style and are cast in bronze or concrete or carved in stone, marble, wood and granite. They depict figures and heads, stylised moons, eagles and fish. Monumental works also stand out, such as “The Bear with the Newborn”, “The World” and a series of miniature sculptures.
