About the museum
The Herakleidon Museum began as a private initiative of Pavlos and Belinda Fyrou. It was founded in 2004 and has operated as a non-profit civil company since 2008. It is housed in a restored neoclassical building at Odos Irakleidon 16 in Thissio, whose foundation stone was laid in 1897, combined with a simple early 20th-century Athenian house on Odos Fedras.
In the first years, from 2004 to 2010, the museum presented exhibitions of works by artists such as M.C. Escher, Victor Vasarely, Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas and Edvard Munch. From 2011 to 2017 it experimented with technology and mathematics exhibitions, such as “Plefsi” on shipbuilding and naval history.
Since 2018 it has operated as an interactive centre for popular science and a technology museum focusing on the achievements of the ancient Greeks. The permanent exhibition “EUREKA. Science, Art and Technology of the Ancient Greeks” is presented in cooperation with EDAVYT and includes, among other things, a section on the Antikythera Mechanism. The museum also runs educational programmes for schools and workshops for children.
