About the museum
The School Life and Education Museum operates under the body EKEDISY, the National Centre for the Research and Rescue of School Material, a non-profit educational and cultural organisation. It began with the aim of preserving historical memory through the rescue, research and study of the history of education and of schools, and operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Education. In its first years it was housed on the historic Tripodon Street in Plaka.
Since 17 January 2022 it has been housed in a new building at 17 Agias Philotheis Street in Plaka, in an area connected with the work of Agia Philothei and the monastic complex “Parthenonas”, where hundreds of women found refuge and learned to read and write during the Ottoman period.
The collection includes school books and educational material covering four centuries, from the 17th to the 20th century: readers, primary and secondary school books, maps, exercise books, school instruments, school photographs and archives. In the permanent exhibition visitors follow the most important milestones in the history of education and can sit in a recreated school classroom with old desks.
