About the museum
In 1966 the Roman Forum was at risk of being covered by a planned new courthouse, but the important finds of the excavation put an end to any future building plans. The complex dates to two phases, the mid-2nd and the mid-3rd century AD, and was a landmark of Roman Thessaloniki.
It consists of a square, colonnaded wings with storerooms and shops, the crypt-stoa, the mint, a bath complex and the odeion, which still hosts cultural events today. The complex also included the stoa of the statues, known as “The Enchanted Ones” (Las Incantadas), whose sculptures are today in the Louvre Museum.
The museum is housed in a specially designed underground building in the western part of the site, as an extension of the crypt-stoa. It displays statues, vessels, inscriptions, coins and other objects from the excavations of the Forum, which show the daily life and social structure of the city from the 3rd century BC to modern times.
