About the museum
The house was built before 1870 and in Ottoman times belonged to the Kotza Kasim Pasha quarter. Here Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the modern Turkish Republic, was born in 1881. After the incorporation of Thessaloniki into the Greek state in 1912, the city council transferred the house to the Turkish state in 1935, which planned to turn it into a museum dedicated to Atatürk.
The building was restored in 1981 and repainted in its original pink colour, and a replica of it was built in Ankara the same year. The Turkish side announced that the house reopened to visitors on 9 November 2025 after extensive restoration.
The museum reflects late 19th-century urban Ottoman architecture. The rooms are furnished with family furniture and tell the story of Atatürk's childhood and adolescence in Thessaloniki, with the room of Zübeyde Hanım, his mother, and the room “Atatürk and His Family”, where personal objects, clothes, photographs and Ottoman documents are displayed. There is also an ethnographic exhibition, a library and interactive presentations on his military career.
