About the museum
The idea of a museum of Macedonia already existed in the interwar period. In 1965 a decree was signed to establish a Museum of the Macedonian Struggle in the building of the former Greek Consulate General, and in 1979 the association “The Friends of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle” was founded, which undertook the restoration of the building. The museum was inaugurated on 27 October 1982.
The neoclassical building was designed by the German architect Ernst Ziller and completed in 1893, after the fire of 1890. Until 1912 it housed the Greek Consulate General in Thessaloniki, which in 1904–1908 functioned as the planning centre of the Macedonian Struggle under Consul General Lambros Koromilas. Later it housed banks and schools.
In 1999 the charitable foundation Museum of the Macedonian Struggle was established, which since 2020 has borne the name “Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and of the Modern History of Macedonia”. The foundation also runs the Research Centre for Macedonian History and Documentation (KEMIT). The permanent exhibition was renovated in 2009 and enriched with interactive applications.
