About the museum
The Central Pumping Station complex was built in 1890–1894 by the Belgian-Ottoman Water Company as part of the first modern water supply network of Thessaloniki. It included the central machine hall, the boiler house, a coal store and the director’s residence.
The pumping station initially operated with steam-driven pumps. Oil engines were added later and, after the Second World War, electric pumps, until it ceased operation in 1978. In 1984 it was decided to convert it into a museum, and in 1987 it was declared a listed monument. The restoration of the three buildings and of the surrounding area of 3,000 m² was completed in 2000.
Since 2001 the museum has been operated by EYATH (the Thessaloniki Water Supply and Sewerage Company). Visits and educational programmes on water and the water supply are organised, while films about the city’s water supply are screened in a special room.
