About the museum
The idea for a museum dedicated to Greek cinema is linked to Melina Mercouri. The museum’s first public appearance was a three-day tribute to 100 years of cinema at the Olympion in December 1995.
The museum is housed in Warehouse A of the Port of Thessaloniki, a building that was formerly used for grain storage. Its present form was shaped with funding from the Third Community Support Framework. Since 2010 its operation has fallen within the remit of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
The exhibition traces the course of Greek cinema from the early 20th century to the present day. Among the exhibits is a rare “magic lantern”, a forerunner of the projector, as well as objects from well-known films, such as the gabardine coat of Bruno Ganz from the film “Eternity and a Day”.
