Leros War Museum

About the museum

The Merikia Tunnel War Museum operates in a military tunnel of the 1930s. The tunnel was built by the Italians when Leros was an important naval base in the Eastern Mediterranean, thanks to Lakki, one of the largest natural harbours in the area.

The memory of the Battle of Leros, fought in November 1943, which turned the island into a theatre of intense air raids, amphibious operations and fierce battles between German forces and the Allies, lives on in the carefully restored underground galleries. Objects found on the island or recovered from the sea are displayed there, as well as photographs, historical maps, models, letters and military equipment of the period.

The visit ends with a short screening of historical audiovisual material. In the surrounding area there is an open-air military park with vehicles, aircraft and military equipment of the period.
