About the museum
The Railway Museum of Thessaloniki is housed in the building of the former Military Station, a station designed and built in 1891–1894 by the Italian architect Pietro Arrigoni. The building was declared a monument in 2012 and is linked with the railway route Thessaloniki–Constantinople.
The museum was inaugurated on 16 June 2001 by the then Minister of Culture. It is run by the association “Friends of the Thessaloniki Railway” and houses collectible objects that were saved through the persistent efforts of the association.
The exhibition covers the Greek railway, from the stationmaster’s office to the technology of signals and telecommunications, as well as the daily life of railway workers. The halls display steam locomotives, passenger and working carriages and sections of the Orient Express.
