About the museum
The Markou Wine Museum was founded in 2005 by the Markou family, who have been engaged in viticulture in Mesogeia and Lavreotiki for many centuries and maintain a tradition of four generations of winemakers. It houses the family's private collection of agricultural tools and winemaking equipment from the 19th century onwards, in a space that also hosts wine tastings, wine appreciation courses and agritourism programmes.
The guided tour begins at a vineyard of the local Savvatiano variety next to the museum, where visitors learn about the origins of viticulture and see the dry-farmed vineyards on Attic soil. It continues in the hall with the tools and machinery of winemaking from the early 19th to the early 20th century, and ends in the museum's garden with a wine tasting accompanied by cheeses and baked goods.
