About the museum
The Vorres Museum was founded in 1983 by Ion Vorres in Paiania, at the foot of Mount Hymettus. After his studies in Canada, Vorres returned to Greece with the vision of preserving and promoting the artistic heritage of the country. The museum extends over more than 11 stremmata and consists of a complex of buildings with a total area of 4,500 m², surrounded by gardens and courtyards.
The folk art collection is housed in “Pyrgi”, named after its two small towers. It consists of two traditional village houses and the ruins of a stable from the early 19th century, joined into a single complex. It is not a precise anastylosis but a reconfiguration of Greek folk and architectural elements, with folk objects of everyday use, rare furniture, carpets, ceramics, paintings and prints, as well as finds from antiquity and Byzantine and post-Byzantine relics. The collections cover more than 2,000 years of Greek cultural history.
The gallery presents contemporary Greek art from the 20th century to the present, with paintings, sculptures and installations. Since October 2016 the gallery has housed the Yannis Spyropoulos Wing, where more than 250 works by the abstract painter are permanently displayed, thanks to cooperation with the Yannis and Zoi Spyropoulos Foundation. The gardens, with their dry-stone walls and Mediterranean plants, are an integral part of the visit.
