About the museum
The Spathario Museum came about through the long-standing effort of the artist Evgenios Spatharis and the wish of the Municipality of Marousi to give Karagiozis a permanent home. In 1991 the public-law legal entity “Spathario Museum of Shadow Theatre of the Municipality of Marousi” was established; in 1993 the first conference on Greek shadow theatre was held; and in June 1995 the museum opened its doors. Regular operation began in January 1996, with organised guided tours and educational programmes for young and old.
Since 2000 the “Spathareia” Shadow Theatre Festival has been held every year, with the participation of shadow-puppeteers from Greece and abroad. The growing number of visitors led to the museum’s move to a larger and more functional Neoclassical building owned by the municipality, close to the heart of the town.
The collection includes the figures of the shadow theatre, Karagiozis and the other heroes, and has been designated by the Ministry of Culture as a monument of recent date. The museum’s website offers a timeline of the Spathari family, a digital archive, educational games and a virtual tour.
