About the museum
Berzsenyi Dániel, the greatest figure of Hungarian ode poetry, lived and wrote in the mansion built in 1811 in Nikla, from 1804 until his death in 1836; the locals called him “Dani uraság” (“Lord Dani”). The Berzsenyi Emlékmúzeum (Berzsenyi Memorial Museum) was set up in the house in 1954.
The former mansion is today a listed monument, and its park is protected. The permanent exhibition currently on view was arranged by Sára Péter in 1972; its material comes from the collections of the Somogy County Museum (Somogy Megyei Múzeum) and the Petőfi Literary Museum (Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeum) in Budapest.
In the spacious rooms are the poet’s personal objects and correspondence, the letters he wrote to fellow poets in the provinces, and the manuscripts and printed editions of his poems. Pipes, quills and folk instruments evoke the way of life of the rural nobility. In the cemetery, an obelisk was erected over the poet’s grave in 1860.
