About the museum
The predecessor of the Marcali Museum opened in 1972 in the building of the former district prison. For twenty years it operated as an organisational unit of the Somogy Megyei Múzeumok Igazgatósága (Directorate of the Somogy County Museums); since 1992 the Municipality of Marcali has been its maintainer. In 2013 it received the classification of regional museum, making it the only classic regional museum in Somogy county.
In 2011 a comprehensive architectural development added modern building sections around the walls of the old prison; in the complex known as the Kulturális Korzó, alongside the museum, the town’s cultural centre and local television also operate.
The permanent exhibitions include “Mesterek és műhelyek” (Masters and Workshops), which presents the tools of Marcali’s small craftsmen and a fair scene; an exhibition recalling the church and parish of Marcali; an exhibition on the history of the local grammar school; and an exhibition on the past of Balaton-Mária-fürdő from 1896 to 1945. The Bernáth Aurél Galéria (Bernáth Aurél Gallery) on Kossuth utca presents a permanent fine-art exhibition compiled from the legacy of the painter.
