About the museum

The Ferencvárosi Helytörténeti Gyűjtemény documents the history of District IX. Collecting local historical material began in the second half of the 1950s; the first publication on the past of Ferencváros appeared in 1959, and in 1973 a temporary local history exhibition opened. For a long time the collection had no permanent institutional base, and its holdings were moved several times.

The collection found space in the Pipa utca apartment block in 1997, received its operating licence in November 1998, and in autumn 2006 found its permanent home at Ráday utca 18. The new exhibition rooms make it possible to run up to three exhibitions at the same time.

The collection holds a photo archive of around 13,000 photographs, a library of more than 1,500 volumes, a collection of about 5,000 ephemera and posters, and around 300 utility objects, mainly from the 19th century and the turn of the century. The permanent exhibition Ferencváros évszázadai presents the history of the district from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. An important task of the collection is cooperation with the district’s schools, including local history competitions and workshops.
