About the museum
Kodály Zoltán lived from October 1924 until his death, until March 1967, in the segment-shaped house at Andrássy út 87–89, on what is today named after him, the Kodály körönd. The flat consisted of four rooms facing the street; its furnishings were more practical than luxurious. The museum, one of the most important creative workshops of Hungarian music history, opened to visitors in spring 1990 and has survived essentially as its occupant left it.
The dining room, with its austere furniture, welcomes visitors; there Kodály received his guests. The salon has two pianos, and its walls are decorated with Petri Lajos’s sculpted portraits and photographs of guests, among them Yehudi Menuhin and Pablo Casals. The innermost room was the actual creative workshop, with a carved writing desk and a library covering two walls. The former bedroom hosts temporary exhibitions.
The Kodály Archívum (Kodály Archive) operates under one roof with the museum; it professionally preserves and researches Kodály documents, manuscripts, printed matter, images, sound recordings and films. The museum belongs to the Kodály Intézet (Kodály Institute) of the Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem (Liszt Academy of Music), and is a member of the European Network of Houses and Museums of Musicians.
