About the museum

The Magyar Királyi Pénzügyőrségi Múzeum opened in Budapest on 4 October 1930, in the finance guard barracks on Fiumei út. Its creation is associated with chief inspector Béla Bittermann, who proposed the collecting from 1927. During the Second World War, valuable material was damaged or destroyed, and the surviving objects were kept in boxes for years.

The collection grew faster after the corps anniversary celebration of 1992. In 1995 the permanent exhibition of the Vám- és Pénzügyőr Múzeum (Customs and Finance Guard Museum) opened in the late Art Nouveau Schiffer Villa on Munkácsy utca. Since 1996 the museum has been a member of the International Association of Customs and Tax Museums.

Today the museum welcomes visitors at two permanent exhibition venues in Budapest: the exhibition on the history of the Hungarian finance guard is in the Schiffer Villa in District VI, and the exhibition on the history of Hungarian taxation is in District VII, in the building of the NAV Kiemelt Adó- és Vámigazgatóság. The museum operates as part of the Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal Képzési, Egészségügyi és Kulturális Intézete (Training, Health and Cultural Institute of the National Tax and Customs Authority).
