About the museum
József Attila was born on 11 April 1905 in Ferencváros, in a one-room flat with kitchen in the tenement house at Gát utca 3. It is not known exactly which flat he was born in. He was only three months old when the family moved to another flat in Ferencváros; of the places of his childhood, Gát utca has become most closely linked with the poet's name.
The first József Attila Memorial Site was set up in 1964, on the initiative of Kassák Lajos, in a ground-floor flat of the tenement house. The exhibition has since been renewed four times, most recently in 2015, with the professional help of the Petőfi Literary Museum, based on the plans of curator H. Bagó Ilona.
The permanent exhibition Eszmélet presents the poet's life and works on 120 square metres, with an interactive board, sound and video material and photographs. The GPS-based smartphone walk József Attila Ferencvárosban (József Attila in Ferencváros) takes visitors through the Ferencváros locations of the poet's childhood.
