About the museum
The Liszt Ferenc Emlékmúzeum és Kutatóközpont (Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Centre) is part of the Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem (Liszt Academy of Music) and opened in September 1986 in the building of the Régi Zeneakadémia at Vörösmarty utca 35. From autumn 1879 to mid-1907 the building was the venue of teaching at the Academy, which had opened in 1875; it was its second seat. After the Academy’s palace on Liszt Ferenc tér opened in 1907, various institutions operated in the building; in 1980 the Ministry of Culture bought it and placed it again at the disposal of the Academy.
Liszt, as the founding president and teacher of the Academy, was given an official residence in the building. He lived in the first-floor flat from January 1881 until his death in 1886, during his stays in Budapest. The flat, now furnished with his former instruments, furniture, library of books and scores and memorabilia, welcomes visitors as a memorial museum. The entrance hall, the bedroom-study and the salon host a permanent exhibition, while the former dining room and the ground-floor foyer host temporary thematic exhibitions.
The collection is based on the instruments the composer bequeathed to the Academy: two Chickering pianos and a Bösendorfer piano, the composing desk, a Mason & Hamlin concert harmonium, an Erard-Alexandre piano harmonium and a glass piano of the Bachmann type. To these are added Liszt’s Budapest collection of books and scores, as well as memorabilia and manuscripts that later arrived through his relatives, pupils and friends. In the concert hall next to the flat, the museum also holds matinee concerts on Saturdays.
