Opening hoursAdmission HUF 800

About the museum

The Mesemúzeum és Meseműhely (Fairy-Tale Museum and Fairy-Tale Workshop) opened on 2 October 2012, based on an idea of the Kossuth Prize-winning poet Kányádi Sándor. It is run by the Petőfi Literary Museum and the Buda Castle District Municipality. It operates on the lower floor of a small building in Buda Castle at Döbrentei utca 15 and consists of three units that complement each other but can also function independently.

The reception area is the venue for theatre and puppet performances, shadow plays and film screenings; drama-pedagogical and creative workshop sessions are also held here. The permanent exhibition “The World of Hungarian Fairy Tales” offers a magical route through three interconnecting rooms: crossing the glass mountain that starts the story and discovering the secrets of the forest, visitors pass seven trials and reach the “half-kingdom” (felekirályság). A temporary exhibition is also on show in one of the rooms.

The museum's mission is to help children learn to read and understand literature from early childhood, to develop linguistic awareness and reading comprehension, and to commit children to classical and contemporary children's literature.
